Do you really know pig ?

Origin & Biology

Domestic pork - also called pig - was once a wild animal, much like a wild boar. There are several breeds of pigs around the world - over 300 - and... they are not all pink. Some pigs even have wool like sheep!

With a mischievous eye, a corkscrew tail and a flattened nose, the pig looks nice. His sense of smell is very powerful and he has an excellent memory of odors. His tongue is even the most sensitive of all mammals.

Like us, pigs are omnivorous and have the choice of a varied diet : they can very well live by eating plants (cereals, roots, tubers, berries ...) - or animals (earthworms, snails, carcasses ...) - or both. Pig stomach are small, They have to eat often and in small quantities, which gives the impression that they're always hungry !

Behaviour

Like their wild boar cousins, the preferred environment for pigs is ... the forest. As they are keen and curious about everything, pigs like to explore the undergrowth or meadows in search of their food. With the help of their snout and their highly developed sense of smell, finding food in the ground is a breeze. They also like to laze long hours, sleeping against each other. They can even sleep up to 12 hours a day.

Contrary to popular belief, pigs are clean and very neat : like wild boars, they like to protect their fragile skin against parasites and sunlight by bathing in the mud. As they do not sweat, pigs also refresh in this way when they are too hot. In fact, pigs are not dirty at all : for example, they do their needs in a secluded place to not dirty their place of life.

Smartness

Recently, scientists have been studying the intelligence of pigs and other farm animals. Experiments are conducted by animal behavior specialists, who are called ethologists. Thanks to them, we now know that the pig is the cleverest of farm animals. His intelligence exceeds even that of a dog.

Some Pig have also successfully won intelligence tests designed for chimpanzees, using a joystick with their snout to get treats. Even when the researchers make the exercise more complicated and try to trap the animals, the pigs manage to foil them

Easier to tame than cats or dogs, pigs are also pets in many countries. Tame pigs recognize their name when they are called. They also can learn to do their thing in a litter like cats, or in the garden like dogs.

Farming

Although some religions prohibit eating, pork is the most consumed in the world. Unfortunately nowadays, the majority of sows are reared in cages, lined up in large livestock buildings. Larger buildings can hold up to 500 sows, living in table-sized cages. In these buildings, temperature, animal feed and ventilation are constantly monitored.

For sows, life is not pink. Locked in cages, they must do their homework, sleep on the floor, and can not behave normally ... They can not take care of their piglets, or even take a step or turn around. Caged sows often have strange behaviors called "stereotopes". Frequent in bored animals in zoos or circuses, these disorders indicate that animals are not doing well.

Fortunately, some breeders have chosen a breeding that better respects the natural behavior of pigs. In organic farms, pigs can live with their families, sleep in the straw ... In all weathers, they can engage in their natural exploration and digging, turning the soil or straw between brothers and sisters, and poking all day even when it's a piggy day !
